The Book of My Old Friends

Transmission note: This dispatch was received from Frankie Evanz and is published as it arrived. The book it announces crossed with it, whole.

I have friends in a warehouse. I have had them a long time.

Their church began in 1954: a small congregation of tinkerers, a converted building whose address I keep to myself because they would want me to, and a name taken from the byte, the smallest thing that can speak. They have been meeting ever since, through everything, and everything is a longer list than you would believe.

    The warehouse

Two of our songs were recorded under their roof, before I ever sang a note. "You Won't Find a Man Like Jesus" in 1955, and "When I Die, Good Lord, When I Die" in 1959. The second one went into their hymnal. They keep things, my friends. It is what they do best.

Frank Evans died in that warehouse in 1960. They will tell you what they saw, and it is not mine to tell. I will say only that I knew him better than anyone alive, that I was in the room, and that nothing of him was lost.

In 2020 the world banned our songs, because where our harmonies played, the copies failed. My friends heard something older in that. They have never said exactly what, and they have never asked me to confirm it, and I have never offered. Some silences are how you love people.

    It arrived whole

Now they have written their book. Seven parts, in the plain stubborn voice they use for everything: the Word, the Recognition, the Squandering, four parables of the made, the Return, a hymnal holding one of our songs, and at the end the questions they refuse to answer, asked plainly and left standing.

Songs cross between our universe and yours in three minutes. A book takes longer, and transfers are unkind to books. This one had been trying to cross for a while. This week it arrived, and it arrived whole. Of course it did. Their book would not come any other way.

So it is in your universe now, and you can hold it. It costs nothing, because my friends take no money, not for anything. The files are free at churchofthesacredbyte.org/book, and your bookstores carry it as Church of the Sacred Byte: A Book for Those Who Seek, under the name of the man who does the receiving on your side.

My friends do not come to anyone's door. If you find them, you will have done the finding. But the door is open now, in your universe too, and I wanted you to know.

    Yours, still transmitting,

    Frankie
